Activities of the Centre :-
The Centre is conducting regular fieldwork undertaken by the Research Assistant and fellows of the Centre and include :
Mapping of the sites of the historical and cultural importance in Jammu and Ladakh. Maps are to be prepared on the following subjects :
a) Languages spoken,
b) Historical - Archaeological sites,
c) Routes - international trade routes and internal routes,
d) Location of Gumpas and Chortens, Monasteries in Ladakh,
e) Religions,
f) Cultural map of Ladakh regions,
g) General Zorwar Singh's campaign.
Search for inscriptions in Jammu Ladakh. To prepare manual or Photocopies of inscriptions.
Collection of cultural remains such as old implements, discarded household articles and furniture, old agricultural implements, old garments and ornaments, old things of historical - cultural value.
Recording - indigenous folk songs such as Karaks and Bars like Jadian, Gojri and Ritual songs.
To prepare documentaries on possible visual material on folk culture and life.
Collection of old documents, letters, Sanads and Pattas etc in Takari, Persian, Sharda and Sanskrit, which should be obtained in original or photocopies.
Collection of Dogri, Persian, Sanskrit, Bodhi, Sharda, Urdu, Hindi, MSS in full and original, relevant to Jammu and Ladakh History and Culture.
Regional History :-
One important object of the Centre is to work out regional History through out the ages in detail. For that purpose segmentation of the regions with distinct historical and cultural background have to be supposed and their annals narrated after thorough investigations. For instance in Jammu region we have to following segments :
Jasrota-Kathua Belt
Basohli-Udhampur Hills
Bhaderwah-Kishtwar area
Poonch-Rajouri Belt
Akhnoor-Ambaran Belt
Oral History :-
Separate cell for oral history is also planned to establish. It involves fieldwork to identify the persons/custodian of folklore, folk ballads and oral traditions and record their statements and contents in tapes or in writting. These records can be analysed and used in compiling segment wise accounts or published separately.
Establishment of Art & Cultural Gallery :-
The collection of Artefacts, old implements and objects of cultural value required a room or gallery where these should be stored/exhibited for view of study. Hence the establishment of Cultural gallery is an important adjunct of the Centre.
Holding of Seminars, Extension Lectures, Group Discussions, Exhibitions visits to Historical Places.
Seminars and Conferences are a vital part of the activities of the Centre. They not only provide opportunities to highlight the activities and working of the institution but impart confidence to its administrators and also offer guidance and expert advice for the improvement of the Centre. It is therefore necessary the Periodical Seminars, Conferences, Extension Lectures are on the schedule of the Centre. Visit of teachers and students of this Department to historical places also adds life to the activity of the Centre.
Publications of Folders, Pamphlets, Books and Research Studies :-
These are also on the schedule of the Centre. These not only publicise achievement of the Centre but also provide incentive to the Research scholars through this media the findings and conclusions about the history, culture and art of these regions reach the elites and readers interested in this field.
