ABOUT HOSTELS OF UNIVERSITY OF JAMMU
Hostels provide an atmosphere for social involvement, personality development and self-learning. Hostels are the centres of social and academic activities, the hubs for gaining experiences and retaining memories of lifetime experiences for staying in company of boarders from different social and ethnic diversity. Boarders get firsthand experience of desirable and laudable objectives of unity in diversity and co-existence. Learning the life patterns and ways of thinking of others from different background helps in enhancing their understanding the viewpoints of others with better perception.
University of Jammu has four Girls Hostels, and one more hostel is under construction. The Hostels are situated on the banks of river Tawi, in close proximity to the University Residential area. The three hostels for girls students which can accommodate approximately 600 students, are named after eminent men and women, historical personalities and rivers: Chandrabhaga Girls Hostel, Priyadarshani Girls Hostel, Sarojini Naidu Girls Hostel and New Girls Hostel who played an important role in shaping the destiny of world and left footprints on the sands of time. All hostels have requisite facilities for stay, and are equipped with necessary amenities for meeting the requirements of boarders. University expects that the boarders will follow all the norms of University and will stay away from prohibited activity of ragging to avoid any disciplinary action. University will take all steps for overall development of the boarders so that they achieve their academic and career targets.
The hostel’s architectural layout is pleasing, with lots of open space and vegetation. The rooms have firm furniture, fans, and other amenities for comfort. The hostel includes many balconies and verandahs on each wing.The University Hostels go to great lengths to provide its residents with a tidy and hygienic living space. All day and all night, hostel staff and wardens are on duty. Every hostel features a visitor's lounge, a dining hall, several water coolers, an outdoor court for games like volley ball and badminton, etc. A well-rounded meal is offered by the mess at affordable prices. The Common Room has a good selection of up-to-date newspapers and magazines made available to boarders throughout the year. Indoor games, an LED TV, and a sound system are available. Every hostel has wi-fi available for accessing the internet. The hostel has also in-home first-aid box with almost all the necessary medicines, ointments and dressing aids. Besides, one doctor resides on the campus for the boarders in case of emergency. Moreover, the hostel has a 24-hours ambulance facility to ensure timely treatment of the health problem.The mess is run by the boarders on a monthly cooperative basis. The menu of the week is planned in advance by the mess committee comprising of PG students and scholars and the office.
The aforesaid facilities and organization of activities such as lectures on important themes of interest and yoga camps have helped the boarders in their overall personality development and launch a pad for a glorious career ahead. Living in a hostel presupposes high degree of integrity, consciousness, cooperation, tolerance and hard work for a bright future and good image of our institution.
