Department of Education was established in the year 1973 with M.Ed. class of one year which had an intake capacity of 25 students along with one Professor and four lecturers. Later another class of M.A. Education of two-years was started in 1978 with an intake capacity of 50 students. The distinguishing feature of Department is that DRS-II has been granted to it under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) by UGC in the year 2018 for the Period of five years i.e. up to 2023. At Present Prof. Rajeev Rattan Sharma is the Head of the Department, Convener, Board of Studies in Education and Teacher Education. The department has 09 Faculty members: 02 Professors, 03 Assistant Professors and 04 Lecturers. The department promotes research through Ph. D programme and research projects. Many students of the Department get through UGC-NET/JRF/SET and are absorbed in various teaching departments of the State as well as Central Government. The educational programmes of the department are job oriented with a mixed method approach of teaching. The department provides quality teaching, practical experience, school internship, project work, sessional work and a chance to share and develop the vision, knowledge, initiative and critical thinking needed to meet the professional challenges and community needs. Moreover, the Department also initiated to train Teacher Educators of different colleges of education affiliated to University of Jammu on constructivist approach and adopted Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Satwari, Jammu to develop it as a Model institution of Excellence in the Region. Department conducts regular activities based on community participation and engagement, celebrates diversity among students, organizes round table interactions, conferences and seminars from time to time for enhancing critical and analytical thinking among students. Students of the department are not only sensitized about their core courses but they are sensitized about the contemporary issues like environmental issues, social issues, etc. Students of the Department maintained two gardens of the University, the focus of which is planting and donating the plants to the new entrants and hence spread the concept of each one plant one. There are ICT labs, reading club and nature club of the department which is managed by the M.A. & M.Ed. students of the department. Recently, Book Bank has been established in the library of the department which is managed by the research scholars of the department.
