In a commendable effort to promote social welfare and environmental sustainability, students from the Department of Sociology, University of Jammu actively participated in the recently held Savi River Tawi Campaign on 5th and 6th March, 2025 during the Navratri festival. The campaign, which aimed at raising awareness about the importance of cleanliness and environmental conservation, saw enthusiastic involvement from the students, who took on various responsibilities, including organizing cleanliness drives, and educating the local community about sustainable practices. They collected materials such as chunri, coconuts, pots and plastic wastes encouraging devotees to reuse certain materials, highlighting significance of river conservation.

Faculty members Prof Vishav Raksha, Head of the Department, Dr. Hema Gandotra, Associate Professor and NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr Gopal Sharma, Lecturer also participated guiding students and helping them integrate sociological perspectives into the campaign’s core activities. The event was held in collaboration with DISHA NGOs and government bodies, who provided support and resources for the initiative. The students not only contributed to the physical aspect of the campaign but also engaged in discussions highlighting the socio-economic impact of environmental degradation, emphasizing the role of education in fostering positive change. The initiative was widely praised for its hands-on approach to tackling pressing social and environmental issues while promoting civic responsibility among the youth.

With the success of the event, the students of the Department of Sociology have expressed their commitment to continue working on similar campaigns, reinforcing their role as active participants in society’s progress and development. These collective efforts underscore the commitment of students, local communities and government bodies towards the conservation and rejuvenation of the Tawi River, aiming to restore its ecological health and bolster its cultural significance.
